LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND – A new NPi Pupillometry study, published in The Lancet Neurology, found that abnormal NPi® (Neurological Pupil index™) was strongly associated with long-term mortality and a poor neurological outcome after an acute brain injury. October 26, 2022 – New Study Results Show NPi® Remains Unaffected by Clinical Intoxication
PHILADELPHIA, PA – A new pupillometry study, published in the journal JACEP Open, utilized NPi® Pupillometry to assess clinically intoxicated patients in the Emergency Departments (ED) of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC). This study found that the Neurological Pupil index™, NPi®, remains unaffected by clinical intoxication and therefore can potentially be used for ED patient evaluation without risk of confounding by key intoxicants of abuse. July 22, 2022 – New Study: A differential of the left eye and right eye Neurological Pupil index is associated with discharge modified Rankin Scores in neurologically injured patients
DALLAS, TX – A new pupillometry study, published in the journal BMC Neurology, found that patients with even one left and right NPi difference of ≥0.7 had higher discharge modified Rankin Scores and worse outcome. July 20, 2022 – Publication: Automated Pupillometry Value Differences Serve as a Prognostic Indicator Even When They are Within Normal Range
DALLAS, TX – A pupillometry study, published in The Journal of Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing, found that patients with greater right and left NPi difference have lower GCS and may be at risk for impending focal neurological deficit. September 20, 2020 – PHILADELPHIA, PA – A new study from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has demonstrated how a specific assessment of the eye could someday help properly diagnose and monitor concussions. The findings were published in JAMA Ophthalmology.
In the first study of its kind, the research team at demonstrated that quantitative pupillary light reflex (PLR) metrics, which determine how the pupil responds to light and are obtained by using a hand-held infrared pupillometer by NeurOptics, and can be used to differentiate concussed adolescent athletes from healthy adolescents. February 24, 2020 – New Study: NPi as an Indicator of Neurological Worsening
A new pupillometry study, “Neurological Pupil Index as an Indicator of Neurological Worsening in Large Hemispheric Strokes”, was published in the online edition of the Neurocritical Care. The study suggests that a significant and sudden drop of NPi can be an indicator of neurological worsening due to brain edema in patients suffering large hemispheric strokes. February 7, 2020 – New Study: NPi in VA-ECMO
GLENVIEW, ILLINOIS – A new pupillometry study, “Neurological Pupil index (NPi) for Early Prognostication After Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation”, was published in the print edition of Chest Journal. The authors found NPi alone had excellent ability to predict a poor outcome from day 1 after VA-ECMO insertion, with no false positives. Read More.

October, 2019 – A new pupillometry study on the impact of increased ICP published in Critical Care Explorations.
The study, “Impact of Increased Intracranial Pressure on Pupillometry: A Replication Study,” involved 273 patients from the END PANIC registry, and sought to replicate a previous pupillometry study by McNett et al. The study’s findings “confirm and extend those of McNett et al: Worsening measures of the pupillary light reflex using automated pupillometry are associated with elevated intracranial pressure.” The study can be viewed here.

May 8, 2019 – New Study on Using Pupillometry Early After Cardiac Arrest Published in Neurocritical Care
The study, “Neurological Pupil Index and Pupillary light Reflex by Pupillometry Predict Outcome Early After Cardiac Arrest,” authored by Richard R. Riker, Mary E. Sawyer, Victoria G. Fischman, Teresa May, Christine Lord, Ashley Eldridge, and David B. Seder, involved 55 adult post-Cardiac Arrest patients treated with targeted temperature management (TTM). The authors concluded: “Very early after resuscitation from cardiac arrest, abnormal Neurological Pupil Index and pupillary light reflex measurements by pupillometer are predictive of poor outcome, and are not usually associated with dilated pupils.” The study can be viewed here.

May 2, 2019 – New Pupillometry Study Published in Critical Care
The study, “Quantitative pupillometry for the monitoring of intracranial hypertension in patients with severe traumatic brain injury,” authored by Fritz-Patrick Jahns, John Paul Miroz, Mahmoud Messerer, Roy T. Daniel, Fabio Silvio Taccone, Philippe Exckert, and Mauro Oddo, examined the relationship between the Neurological Pupil index (NPi) and invasive ICP in 54 patients with severe TBI. The study found for subjects with intracranial hypertension (ICHT), episodes of sustained elevated ICP were associated with a concomitant decrease in NPi. The full study can be viewed here.
April 25, 2019 – A new study was published in the April edition of the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases (JSCVD).
The study, “Correlation of Objective Pupillometry to Midline Shift in Acute Stroke Patients”, authored by Mohamed Osman, Sonja E. Stutzman, Folefac Atem, DaiWai Olson, Amber D. Hicks, Stefany Ortega-Perez, Salah G. Aoun, Ahmed Salem, and Venkatesh Aiyagari, involved 134 patients with acute ischemic stroke or intracerebral hemorrhage. The study found in patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, there is a significant correlation between the septum pellucidum (SPS) and the Neurologic Pupil index (NPi®)….. but not with pupillary size. The authors concluded NPi assessment by automated pupillometry could be considered as a useful surrogate to noninvasively monitor midline shift in stroke patients and help in utilization of imaging and indicate the need to intervention. April 1, 2019 – New Study Results Show NPi Improves Following Osmotic Therapy in Critical Care Patients
A new study was published in the April edition of Neurocritical Care, the official journal of the Neurocritical Care Society (NCS).
The study, “Effects of Osmotic Therapy on Pupil Reactivity: Quantification Using Pupillometry in Critically Ill Neurologic Patients”, authored by C Ong, M Hutch, M Barra, A Kim, S Zafar and S Smirnakis, involved 72 patients at two centers in Boston. The study found that significant quantifiable improvement in pupillary reactivity, by measuring NPi® (Neurological Pupil index™), followed administration of osmotic therapy in critically ill patients with cerebral edema. The study was conducted with support from the American Brain Foundation. The study can be viewed here.
