December 1, 2018 – New Pupillometry Study Published in the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing

CLEVELAND, OHIO – A new pupillometry study and accompanying editorial were published in the December edition of the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing (JNN), the official peer-reviewed journal of the American Association of Neuroscience Nursing (AANN).

The study, “Pupillometry Trends in the Setting of Increased Intracranial Pressure,” was authored by M McNett, C Moran, D Grimm, and A Gianakis from The MetroHealth System in Cleveland, Ohio. The editorial of the same title was authored by JR von Gaudecker from the Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis, IN.

The study is a secondary data analysis of a 2017 study from The Metro Health System, “Correlations between hourly pupillometer readings and intracranial pressure values.” The purpose of this study was to evaluate trends in pupillometer values in the setting of increased ICP among a cohort of 76 critically ill patients with neurological injury. The study concluded that spikes in ICP values resulted in corresponding variations in paired pupillometer values specifically the Neurological Pupil index (NPi®), but not necessarily for pupil size, and these changes “were slight and likely would not have been detected with manual examinations” (McNett, 359-360). The following links allow you to view the study and editorial.
